Diet Challenge and Zach's Room

(click on the pic for the link)

It is that time again. I had a 3 pound weight loss this week, though I can take no joy nor pride in it. The stomach flu gets all the credit! It also gets credit for completely destroying my plan. All the dry toast and crackers had me craving carbs in no time. My stomach is still not able to tolerate lots of salad and meat, so I am looking at a different plan. Still low carb, but tweaked. I would have no problem sticking with the Atkins style of low carb I have been doing except 1) it is not working like in the past...only 3 pounds a month...not worth it. And 2) it is expensive. So I am starting this week (today) on a new plan. It is a cross between, low carb, Body For Life, and Biggest Loser....I will be eating 5-6 small meals a day...no super sized anything!!Healthy choices, of course. No preservatives or artificial junk. ABSOLUTELY NO high fructose corn syrup and NO white stuff (flour, sugar, potatoes, rice...)I will be careful to choose carbs with a low glycemic index (GI). For example, this morning I had oatmeal and a light yogurt. Yogurt has a GI of 14, and Oatmeal 55. Anything below 55 is low. 56-70 is medium (I will stay out of this range) and over 70 is high. You can see a sample chart here. Just a note...not all low GI foods are ok. A Snickers bar falls into the low GI range, but is full of empty calories. Also, mixing foods can have an effect on GI counts. Eating the yogurt with the oatmeal actually lowered the GI count in the oatmeal, though I am not sure how much. I will always eat a protein with a carb and a carb with a protein. Small portions. 2 meals a day will have a low GI carb and those will be early in the day. The other meals will have veggies and a protein. Dinner will be very light and no real carbs to speak of except the salad or veggies. Something new for me to study...I thought I had read it all, but I guess not! I devoured this book... ...and now plan to re-read the Body For Life book and The Biggest Loser book. This new plan also means I will have to UP my exercise!! I think I will need to join an actual gym. It is only 19.95 a month and has great facilities. A review ranked it 5 stars and I have one just down the street. It seems busy early morning and late afternoon/evening, but mid-day there is no one there...that is when I will go.If Sweetheart is busy I can take the kids with me!OK, enough of that! Here are some pics I have promised of Zach's room. It is still not quite finished, but you get the idea.On either side of the window, Sweetheart put a large Z and H (Zach's initials). Zachary helped with the painting. They also painted (and repaired) the stripes of wood on the paneling. Red, blue, yellow and green.

They hung posters and baseball caps....The frames will contain Zach's own artwork...just haven't gotten them in there yet.

Another poster is going over the bed, but the one Zach wanted was out of stock. He is willing to wait for it.Well that is all for now. Kids are schooling, Kyle went back to work today, and Sweetheart is in the basement sanding. I planned to dust and vacuum, but think I will wait til he is done for the day. Right now I am going to listen to my kids read out loud and stitch on the Underground Railroad sampler at the same time!

Hi Bren, just checking in to see how you are feeling after that awful stomach flu. These things can be cruel, & it is not a fun way to lose weight!
Zach's room is looking great!

Your observations about the gym are true at my gym too - busy in the morning and late afternoon. Beth and I go in the evening, usually around 6-7 and spend about 1-1/2 hours, 3x a week. I just wish it were only $20/month! Good luck!

That bug must have traveled east because we struggled with the stomach flu last week too!

I'm glad you're doing better!

Thanks for sharing your "diet" plan...

Zach's room looks awesome!!! I especially like the Z.H. initials beside the windows!

Have a blessed day!

I'm glad you're feeling better!

I've been doing DDR with my kids daily and some other stretching/breathing exercises, and am looking forward to warmer weather so I can walk every morning again.

I have the Low Carb Bible, too, I got it for my birthday last year. I think it needs to make it's way to the top of my reading list!

I'm glad you are feeling better. That price for the gym is very reasonable. I paid $55 for 3 months and I can use it daily for as long as I want. If I want to go in 2 or 3 times a day I can do that.
I go in around 1:30 PM Mon-Fri. It does kinda slow down at that time of day. I usually work out for 55-60 minutes...some days longer.

Bren~ I will make a deal with you, I will pray for your weight loss and you can pray for mine!! Good luck with the gym, I have a gigantic eliptical machine thingy in my living room but don't use it as much as I should, maybe I will start. Zach's room looks great, nice that he helped out wiht some of the work probably made him real proud of the room in the end. Have a great week ahead.
Blessings,Joann

Bren, I am so relieved that the horrible flu bug has finally left your home. Zack's room looks great. I hear you on the diet. I plan to stick with the Atkins for a little while longer, then will go to the low glycemic index way of eating. I have a book called 'The New Glucose Revolution'. It is all about the glycemic index. I am doing the Atkins to not only lose weight, but also get my blood glucose down lower. I plan to give this diet till the first of March then start doing the glycemic index way of eating myself. I would love to be close enough to a gym to attend regularly. We have a Curves about 18 miles away, but I don't want to drive that daily. Good luck on this new way of eating. Winona

good job on the 3lbs - even if it was from being sick. i must say i am so glad to hear you are not doing atkins anymore. diets like that always worry me when people use them. it sounds like the one you've picked is very complicated, but if it works for you it certainly sounds much healthier. just remember carbs aren't bad when eaten in healthy amounts (and it sounds like that is what you will be doing).

Sorry to hear about your bout with the flu. It is nasty to deal with.

Zach's room is looking great! What a marvelous idea to hang his hats on the wall. They'll always be available, yet add a great touch to the overall look.
