How Do You Store Your Books?

I know as a quilter you have TONS of books!! I actually do not have many quilting books. The books I do have are spread out all over the house. I would LOVE to get them in one spot. I think that is going to be difficult. I was sorting through my books to make more room on a certain shelf for the kids books, when I found these. Look inside.

And I found this.
There are 10 books to complete the set. My new mission...to find the other 9. Copyright is 1948 so I may have a pretty difficult time. Number 5 is in mint condition. I mean like no one ever even opened it. If you see these anywhere, let me know.

Back to my book dilemma...I am so excited to build a Heritage Library for my children. This includes not only children's books, but also my quilting books and my own collection of fiction and non fiction. Here is the book situation at my house now. I collected all the books from my kids rooms and put them in one place. Here. Not starting with many. The thing is I have boxes of books in the basement that can, and will be added to the library, but there is no more room here. They are sorted by category..all the first readers are together, all the chapter books, history, science, Christian, etc. So a place to add to the library is my main problem.
My quilting/sewing books are going to remain separate. I store them here.
The rest of the books are everywhere...in my bedroom...
This bottom shelf is 3 layers deep...a big no-no! Looks like a great Tackle It Tuesday project!!!
What will I do with the boxes of books in the basement? And have you ever loaned out a book and never gotten it back and you can not for the life of you remember who you even loaned it too?? My Left Behind series, which is all hardcover, and cost a bundle, is missing the first 2 books. Who did I loan them too? I have no idea. My Love Comes Softly series has at least 2, maybe 3 missing. Now I am just ranting! Back to the subject at hand... I also keep baskets of books in all the bathrooms. They just collect dust. That one doesn't even belong in there! I was looking all over for it. So I have some planning and problem solving to work through. I can not run to Ikea and grab bookcases...Sweet Hubby's orders. I will have to come up with a solution on my own. Maybe you could help...if you have a really organized manner in which you store your books, write a blog post and show it. Let me know in the comments that you are doing this so I can be sure to check it out. I will be spending the weekend in the basement re-organizing our storage area...a HUGE job, but necessary since someone got into boxes and made a mess. OK, so show me your books!

We have 4 large book case and 2 small ones. I use one of the small ones for my quilting books, and one for my cooking books. I was using one of the large ones for my fiction, but it was getting very full, so I cleaned it out. My DH saw how much room I now had and filled it up with his books (he already has the other 3 bookshelves full). So I no better of, so I also have a few books piled in the living room :)

I have a 'library'. We have five book shelves in a section of our basement that are packed with books. I try to have them organized (recipe book section/ children's books/ biographies etc) but they tend to get jumbled around as we look at them. I also have a book shelf in my livingroom. I've designated a few shelves on that for school books (since we do most of our schoolwork in that room) and a few other special books. Each child also has a book shelf in his/her room for favorite books. I donated several books to the library when we moved because our 'library' was going to be smaller. You tend to collect a lot of books when you homeschool.

Sorry Bren. My book storage system is as chaotic as they come. My house is a bit like yours with books shoved in anywhere they will fit. And I hate it when people don't return your books. Every so often I have a sortout for the charity shops but I have been known to regret giving certain ones away and then buy them back !

Aren't books wonderful? My quilt books are stored on an old bookshelf hidden in the closet where I keep my fabric stash. The majority of our 'library' is on a bookshelf purchased for that purpose, but there are books throughout the house, in a cupboard, on tables. You don't have to move far to find something to read around this place. Someday we hope to have a room dedicated as a library - the walls lined with book . . . someday . . .

I have one small folding bookcase in my sewing room with my sewing books on it. I will take a pic and post to my blog. We have a bookcase in the living room, another in the basement...so our other books are scattered out.

I have that same Aunt Martha's quilt book! I have seven different ones of those. My mom had them when I was growing up...now I have them.

I love all my books. We have so many, & there are a lot stored down in the garage, & my shelf in here is just crammed. We got a bedhead, with tons of space for books, & that is full too.

I am a big fan of books as well and I have lots. We have books in 5 different bookshelves around the house. Jim has his own bookshelves and I have mine. I have one bookshelf just full of quilt books and magazines, patterns etc.

Good luck with sorting through your books. Ikea -- that's the place you need to go -LOL

I store my books everywhere - on the floor,in a basket, stacks here and there, on a shelf or two or three. And, let's not discuss the magazines - I'm a magazine junkie. LOL

We have well over 1000 books and Carl's Dad made us about 10 bookcases that we lined our downstairs living area with. They are full to overflowing! Help!

I love books! I love the smell of new books and I love the feel of old books in my hands.
I might buy a book and not read it for a couple of years just savouring the fact that I have it and will read it one day.......
I have Ikea bookcases. Nothing special but very functional.
I love your old Aunt Martha book. Good luck with finding the others in the set.

My books are all stored in Ikea bookshelves, not neatly or organized.

I have five--well, actually six--book shelves in the living room and a few more throughout the house. Five of those in the living room were the cheap kind, but we screwed them to the wall and dressed them up with trim, so they look like they're much nicer than they really are. Of course, that probably doesn't help you a lot if you are prohibited from buying shelve. What about thrifting? Oh, about looking for those old sewing books, there are a couple Yahoo groups, like Sewitsforsale, where people list things like that. I think you can post if you're looking for something specific. I'd post to those sites and on any other sewing/quilting board I could find! Or maybe you can go thrifting for shelves and be lucky enough to find the books! Doubtful, but you never know . . . .

Oops! SEVEN bookshelves in the living room! I guess you can tell I like books, huh?! LOL!

I know books take up a lotsof space, but the enjoyment they provide is well worth it, IMHO. I have piles everywhere and no more room for bookcases, but I keep buying more. So I am no help!

I, too, have LOTS of books. As a matter of fact, I am teaming up with a friend on Monday to tackle my books and get them organized. I will be organizing them by subject, similar to what you listed. It will be a loooong process but it will be worth it. Then I will be labeling the shelves in an attempt to keep them organized.
We have quite a few bookcases but could always use more because I am always 'gathering' more books. We store books in just about every room (including the children's rooms... we like for them to have their own shelves for some of their books, too)
Most of our bookshelves I found at thrift stores and garage sales. I have found that to be very helpful. Setting aside a little money here and there to purchase a very used book shelf has really come in handy.
I, also, have a plastic, Rubbermaid-type, 'bookshelf' with doors that we purchased from Lowe's. It sits in the garage and will store our school records and other 'soon-to-be-appointed' books and such.
I have, also, used milk crates to store books. ;o)
phew! Happy book organizing! ;o)

Also, thank you for your prayers. We appreciate that SO much.
I, also, answered your question at the post you left your comment. ;o)

Have a blessed Lord's Day tomorrow.

I just re-did my office/den and I have shelving space galore. I also went through and purged books -- to the tune of approximately 10-15 boxes full. I read. A lot. Not all of the books are ones I needed to keep. I still have tons. And two more massive bookshelves in other rooms. We stumble on books, trip on them, but always read them!

Sorry I can't be more helpful here!

I store most of my books in an open face book case and my hutch. I don't collect books like fabric. Once I read a book (of fiction) I tend to pass it on to someone or trade it in for another one. I recently went through all my quilts books and kept a selection that I would use more efficiently and donated the rest.

I have the other Civil War Book-Love Letter Quilt, and will be hosting a civil war club at my LQS using patterns and history from that book. It should be a fun club!
