Trip Planning

I have a love of American History and the Civil War is my favorite era of study. Imagine my delight as I plan a 2 day trip to Galena, Illinois! It is the home of 9 Civil War Generals, including Ulysses S. Grant. It was also the Presidential headquarters for our 18th President! Now my mother, who is taking me on this wonderful trip, has shared all the wonders of the town, from the beautiful scenery to the oodles of antique shops. Those will be great fun, but I am so looking forward to learning about deep civil war history here. Grant's house will be on the top of my list, along with the Desoto House Hotel...the actual Presidential headquarters. Abraham Lincoln also stayed at the Desoto House.A trip to the Museum which, "Housed in an 1858 mansion, the museum offers special exhibits featuring Grant and the Civil War, mining, steam boating, clothing, geology, toys, dolls, and agriculture." (per the Galena tourism website)I also want to tour the Ryan Mansion. The tour is given by the "back stair staff" and is seen through the eyes of the help. It is fully cast and quite entertaining.I am certain we will dine at the "Fried Green Tomatoes" cafe and shop the wonderful little shops of Galena. 87% of the buildings in this town are registered historical sites. It has been 10 years since I have been away overnight, so I am very excited to go. A trip to Disney World could not compare to Galena for me! The weather says it will be 67 and sunny when I go on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. I can not imagine that as I look out my window right now. It is snowing!!! YES! Snow!

I am so envious of this trip! History, scenery, fried green tomatoes.....oh my!

I do have to say the pamphlet picture is kinda weird. It looks like they're force-feeding a lady tied to the bottom of the stairs!

How wonderfu that you and your Mom can do this together!! Enjoy this precious time with her because life is short.
I too love the Civil war history and we have visited numerous battlefields and cemetaries.
I read your post on Offense. I could not believe some of the subjects mentioned. I myself lost some readers when I began to include Bible verses and references to my faith. I don't try to push my beliefs on anyone else. I don't care to read rants and raves about politicians, Public figures or issues. I don't comment on these and might even cease to read a blog if it is the main focus. We don't any of us need negativity in our life. However, if I ever say anything which offends anyone I want them to know it wasn't intentional. We all have our own way of homemaking. What works for one, might not work for another. There is no reason to feel offense because of it.
Please enjoy this time away. I know how important it is. I try to have a get-away with my daughter once a year.
Well, I've got to take care of my grands now.
